Odessa oblast is a historically and geographically recognized as an agricultural area. More than 17% of the GDP of the Odessa oblast is formed of agriculture the major part of its production is exported. The main areas of agricultural production are a specialty crop production (growing crops and industrial crops, vegetables, grapes) and livestock (cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry, milk, and meat, wool).
Overall, the share of livestock products in total gross output of the Odessa oblast is 28.1%, crop - 71.9%.
The most typical soil of the Odessa oblast is the southern chernozems and ordinary, middle - and low humus content, in the north is dominated by chernozem humus, and ashed.
The southern alkaline chernozems are in the coastal part of the region. In the valleys and ravines ubiquitous chernozem-meadow saline soil and salt marshes are laying.
Depending on the climatic conditions forms of management has been created in accordance with the industrial areas of specialization in agriculture. Grain and livestock area, specializing in the production of sugar beets are covered with Anan'evskyi, Balta, Kodyma, Kotovsky, Krasni Okny, Lyubashevsky and Savransky raions.
Grain and livestock area with specialization in the production of sugar beet and sunflower is the area of Berezovsky, Velikomikhaylivske, Ivanovo, Nikolayivskyi, Rozdelnyanskyi, Frunze and Shiryaevo raions.
For grain and vegetables, dairy and poultry area include Bilyayivskyi, Ovidiopol and Kominternovo raions. Artsyzkyi, Bilhorod-Dniestrovskyi, Bolhradskyi, Izmailskyi, Kiliyskyi, Reniyskyi, Saratskyi and Tarutinskyi and Tatarbunarskyi raions belong to the grain and livestock areas.
The main types of chemical production are: synthetic ammonia, mineral nitrogen fertilizers, industrial gases, copper sulfate, detergents, paints, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, products made of plastics.
Active reform of the agrarian market infrastructure is carrying out, the main goal is to ensure the movement of agricultural products from producer to consumer.
There are 15 agricultural trading houses, 36 wholesale food markets, 342 branded shops and there is a well-developed network of small and medium-sized food markets.
