The economic potential of the Nikolaev oblast is an integral part of the Ukrainian economy is characterized by a strong and diversified industry, agribusiness, and transportation network and port development.
The oblast is located in southern Ukraine in the basin of the river Southern Bug. On the west it borders with the Odessa oblast, in the north - Kirovograd, in the east - the Kherson and Dnepropetrovsk oblasts. To the south is washed by the Black Sea.
The climate is temperate continental with mild winter and hot dry summers. Typical kinds of soil are: ordinary, medium and low-humus chernozems, southern chernozems, dark chestnut. In the floodplains there are of alluvial-meadow soils. In the riverine and coastal areas there is sandy and loamy soil.Agricultural area includes crops, which are the main crops cereals (winter wheat, spring barley, maize), industrial crops - sunflower, sugar beet, vegetables, melons, because of favorable climatic conditions are developed horticulture and viticulture, and livestock meat and dairy direction.
Arable land takes 1764 K hectares of land (1960), including cereals with 961.3 K ha, technical - 185 K ha, potatoes, vegetables and melons 54.7 K hectares, fodder 492.6 K ha. The highest rate of threshing grain in Ochakivskyi (51%), Berezanskyi (43%), Voznesenskyi (43%) and Novoodeskyi (43%) raions. The highest yield rate is in Arbuzinskyi - 29.6 kg per ha, Veselinovskyi - 28.4 t per ha and Yelanetskyi - 27.9 t per ha raions.
Note that agriculture is the second largest in production and the first in employment rate of material production area.
There is 1.3 hectares of arable land per one local inhabitant and it is over 11 hectares of arable land per worker employed in agriculture.
