Dnepropetrovsk oblast is located in the southeastern part of Ukraine in the basin of the middle and lower streams of the Dnieper River. It shares borders with Kharkov, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Nykolayev and Kherson oblasts.
The climate of the Dnepropetrovsk oblast is characterized by hot summers and relatively cold winters. The average annual rainfall for the area is 400-480 mm, about two thirds of them falls in the warm season.
Stretching only two hundred kilometers from north to south and two hundred and seventy kilometers from east to west Dnepropetrovsk oblast has such a variety of environmental conditions that led to the formation on the territory of two hundred seventy-seven soil types, which differ in composition, physical and biological parameters, and therefore, require individual approaches to their development and use in agriculture.
It is discovered that eighty percent of the total area of the Dnepropetrovsk region occupied by chernozem soils of different subtypes (ordinary and southern).
Full-profiled chernozem lying on the plain spaces takes for about 48.3% of the total land area, including the ordinary chernozems - about 42.3%, south - 5.7%, alkaline - about 0.3%. In the rest of the region (15.1%), meadow chernozem, chernozem-meadow, meadow, marsh, swamp, and turfy soil, salt marshes and salt are more common.
Agriculture is the second sector of economy after the industry.
This includes about 8% of the total output of goods and services of the region.
The main areas of agricultural development are the production of: - cereals, technical and vegetable cultures - meat and dairy products - poultry products.
Development of agricultural production is based on improving the structure of sown areas of crops, the introduction of soil conservation tillage systems, technology intensive cultivation of cereals, sugar beet and sunflower.
The area of farmland used for agricultural production is 2258.9 K hectares, or 70.8% of the total area.
The natural (unaffected by human activities) in the area now is less than 3% of the total area of the region. Of these, 2.6% (or 152.4 K hectares) are forest, which are located mainly in the north - in beams (ravined) in floodplains (floodplain) and on the sandy terraces of the (arena). About 1% of them in the forest shelterbelts.
